4 Ingredient Pasta

Ingredients
pasta - anything you have will do
olive oil - just a drizzle
1-2 pints fresh tomatoes
1 garlic clove - crushed

Seriously how easy can this get?  Throw 1 or 2 pints of cherry tomatoes on a baking sheet with a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper.  Roast for about 20 minutes at 375 degrees or until soft and slightly blackened.

Meanwhile the pasta is cooking til al dente.  Toss the pasta with the roasted tomatoes and a fresh crushed clove of garlic.  Sit and enjoy. x

Chic but not Vain

I'm so late on this one but nevertheless, so glad I found it. Would you/could you wear all white all the time?  This is a fabulous little film and links about a woman who turned 60 and reinvented herself.  I'm inspired by her transformation, singlemindedness and commitment to her style.  There are lessons for all of us in this.

The restraint she had is truly a thing of beauty, and I'm fascinated by every detail and want to know more. Let's discuss in the comments!

October Garden

We've been working quite a bit on all areas of the garden.  So far we've (he) trimmed a lot of the trees and bushes back.  Tons of weeding has taken place and lots and lots of pruning.  So much more still needs to be done but I will wait til January because I love using the branches and any available flowers throughout the holiday season.  So other than watering and a bit of feeding I think mission accomplished.  I say that knowing that when I next step foot out there a job will present itself.  So basically it's never done. 😂

Caring for my Accessories

Whether my accessories are brand new or very old, I treat them all the same...with loving care.  I really do.  If something is good enough to make it into my small house then you better believe I love it and treat it with respect.  Every season I take stock of what I wore and what I didn't.  And just because I didn't wear something this season doesn't mean I don't love it, it may be that I just wasn't feeling it this year.  I've had a lot of my clothes for decades now and they come in and out of my radar in different ways.

I always wipe down all my bags I've worn and will even go so far as to vacuum the insides to get rid of any dust that may have accumulated.  I stuff them with tissue paper and put them in a dust bag and store them in my armoire.  Shoes get a similar treatment. They all get cleaned with warm sudsy water and even the soles are wiped down.  Sandals get wrapped in tissue paper and stored in a special box in my closet until next year.  This year I rarely wore any t-strap flat sandals.  I mostly wore 2 pair of block heel slides.

This is the first new handbag I've bought in ages.  Something about that Bee and the colors got my attention and I kept coming back to the Frances Valentine website until one day it was 70% off.  I look forward to using it next spring and summer.  Do tell how you care for your accessories bc as usual I learn something new from you. x

What do you Actually Spend on Clothing?

What a question right? I can remember a time when I would not be able to even look at those numbers.  According to this article we will each spend between $1800-$4200 per year on clothing and accessories. The article further details why we shop. I was disappointed that shopping for the love of fashion was not a category.  I've certainly shopped for many reasons but I happen to just love fashion. I love truffling around 2nd hand shops and vintage stores but almost always leave empty handed.  Finding old garments and admiring the workmanship, fabric and design is my idea of a great day.

The above outfit is a good mix of how I dress on most days.  The shirt is a boys oxford from the Goodwill that was $3.  The old oxford fabric is so incredibly soft.  Finding fabrics like that today is downright hard.  For Christmas a couple of years ago I ordered an oxford shirt from a high-end retailer and was so disappointed in the fabric that I sent it back.  Two weeks later I found this one at the GW.  The pants are the Who What Wear Cropped Flares from Target for $29.  They are great work pants, indestructible, hide oil stains and are comfy.  The shoes are Naturalizer kitten heels that I've had for decades.  The bag is my newest and biggest purchase this year from Frances Valentine.

This is what I've spent so far this year.

Vintage Gold Silk Blouse $12
Cole Hahn Block Heel Sandal $6
White Linen Trousers $2.50
Who What Wear Bardot Dress $35 (similar)
Vintage Brown Trousers $10
Vintage Wrangler Jeans $8
Gucci Loafers $16
White Painters Pant $8
Blush Target Tee $10 (here)
Who What Wear Cropped Flares $29 (here)
Green Vintage Sweater $2
Frances Valentine Handbag $160 (similar)

Total $304.50

How about you?  Can you tally the numbers?  Yikes!

5 Fall Tablescapes you Can Try Before Thanksgiving

I was invited by the lovely Cindy Hattersley of Rough Luxe to participate in her Thanksgiving Table Post.  I normally don't do these types of things but I figured it would force me to start getting ready for my own Thanksgiving and perhaps give you the push you need too!

My whole look starts with this amazing antique farm table that I got from Alex.  Isn't it good?  I could throw some plates and cuttings from the garden on it and I'd be done. And guess what, that's pretty much what I did. I wanted to use some blush (of course) instead of the traditional Thanksgiving colors. I'm in love with that look.  I did purchase the new Pottery Barn napkins because I just love the linen/cotton blend and they will blend in nicely with my existing napkins.  I can even envision them at Christmas.  I hope you enjoy what I've put together and maybe you can use some of my ideas or those of the other talented bloggers who are participating.  At the end of my post you will find links to their blogs.

Field

Have I ever mentioned how much I love living in Redlands? 😁
We went to an estate sale on Sunday, left empty handed then realized I matched the field across the road.  I love wearing camel with white.  While some of you can wear gray, I cannot.  Camel warms my skin and gives me some color, whereas gray absolutely drains me.  So to each their own!

The weather here has been glorious, unlike the news.  What is happening to our world? Between politics, Equifax, earthquakes, hurricanes, mass shootings and losing Tom Petty, I'm afraid to turn on the TV let alone leave the house.  Which I am aware is no way to live yet I feel like staying home more than ever.  Please do share how you are coping with everything.  Do you limit your TV time? Maybe I'm watching too much. There is a fine line between staying informed and overload.  I think I may have crossed that line.  xo

October Goals

The road leading to our cottage is so pretty this time of year.

1.  Continue working in the garden bc with cooler weather it's a lot more pleasureable.

2.  Start thinking about my Thanksgiving menu and table ideas. Watch this space bc I have a beautiful table setting up my sleeve.

3.  Clean and polish all summer shoes.  Wrap in tissue paper and put away.  Same with summer bags.  Thoroughly empty, wipe down and stuff with tissue paper and place back in its dust bag. Take anything to cobbler that needs fixing.  When I do this then next season as I unwrap everything, it feels sorta special.

4. My yoga wear is pretty shabby these days.  One top is too big and one pant is too small. What?  Anyway I tend to wear all black so replacements will be easy.

5.  Now that the basement has been sorted yet again, I will be listing at least 5 things on eBay so I need to get on that asap. Listing things on eBay is always a pain but using my cellphone to do so makes it a lot easier.  When I have them listed I'll provide a link in case you need some of my junk.

6.  With all that being said I want to slow down and do less.  You know it makes sense.

What are your October Goals?  I'm so glad I'm doing this bc it really made me get things DONE around here.  Do share how it is going for you.  x

The Blush of Fall

I've been loving the soft blush color that has been everywhere lately.  I'd love a car in this blush pink. Why don't women design cars?  How beautiful would it be to get into a blush car with black and white cabbage rose interior?  lol, that'll never happen. But the next best thing has been adding little touches here and there of this lovely blush around the house.

I've done it with pillows, flowers and candles.

These are the same pillow covers that Country Living used in my living room.  They are washed velvet and I love them.  They are so well constructed and the fabric is thick.  Here is the exact color I'm using, Mauve.

I paired the blush pillow with a couple of black and white cabbage rose pillows I made early in the year from a fabric remnant I had. I love the way they look together!

The farmers market had huge bundles of this blush colored stock so I sprinkled them throughout the house.

This past weekend I was wandering around Williams Sonoma and found this pink grapefruit candle which is divine.  I would never have thought that pink would look so lovely in fall decor but it totally works for me.

For some easy and inexpensive ways to add some blush to your life here are some pretty links...

Checking in on September Goals

There are only 4 days left in September so I wanted to check in with my goals and see how I've done.

Goal #1 was to get out into the garden.  I would say that is 50% done.  Our garden requires so much work.  Without having a sprinkler system, a lot of time goes into just keeping everything alive.  We did quite a bit of work in the front but all the side gardens need attention.  So this goal will carry over into October.

Goal #2 was working on the inside.  I did a lot of decluttering and rearranging this month which I plan to share with you next month. Today we plan to tackle the basement so my donation box will grow for sure.  After today I'd say this goal will be complete!

Goal #3 was to go through my wardrobe.  I shared that with you on Monday.  While it is complete I know it's an ongoing task. One of my favorite shopping secrets is to buy anything that needs replaced at the end of the season when things are on sale.  For instance the last 5 summers I've carried my wicker bag, but it is wearing out. The wicker is starting to fray and the handles are starting to separate.  So last week I ordered a new bag from Frances Valentine.  This is Kate and Andy Spades new company and has all the spunk of the original Kate Spade. The bag I ordered is sold out but they still have lots of gorgeous bags and right now an additional 25% off the sale price. Take a look if you are in need.

Goal #4 was to get the pantry and refrigerator sorted since Larry is now vegan.  Gone are the traditional ice cream and cookies and in their place he's enjoying Trader Joes Soy Vanilla and their Oatmeal and Chocolate Chip cookies. All the shelves in both places were thoroughly cleaned and organized.

Goal #5 was to increase my exercise and I'm super happy to report that I've rejoined my Yoga gym.  It feels so good to be back even tho I'm so sore!

I'm looking forward to October and seeing what I'll come up with. How did you do?  We still have 4 days left!

Oh in case you're interested that's my Williams Sonoma Apron I'm wearing in the photo.

I wear an apron all the time when doing chores around here.  I find it saves my clothing from stains and wear and tear.

Happy rest of September guys! x

My Closet Cleanout

Good morning dear readers.  Last week when the temps dropped I knew it was time to start changing over my wardrobe from warm weather to cooler weather.  As most of you know I only have one tiny closet in the whole house so I have a canvas covered garment rack in the basement that I can use to rotate my clothes. At one point in the 10 years that we've been here I was able to keep all my clothing inside and not have to rotate anything but in the last 2 years that hasn't been the case.  Mostly because I began collecting vintage coats.  Some of you know that my son Alex is in the vintage business and he and his wife B would always come upon an old coat that was "perfect" for me.  I'm not blaming them, no no no!  It's always me. I really do know how to say no, but when it is free and fabulous it gets hard.  So all that being said, the summer dresses and blouses are downstairs now and my coats and sweaters are inside. Below I show some of my newer things and ways I hope to wear them.  This is really just like me talking out loud to myself to help make sense of everything.  I'm sure you know what I mean.

Ok, I see this as a good base layer for cooler weather and all I have to do is throw on a good oversized sweater or old coat.  These A New Day long sleeve tee's are at Target. They are a blend of cotton and modal and feel great, I'm loving all things blush at the moment.  They come in lots of colors, necklines and sleeve lengths.  I know I'll be purchasing a black one the next time I pop into Target.

Here are my beloved Who What Wear Cropped Flares.  I love these pants.  They make everything look better because of the little flare. They have a zipper in the back but I never use it.They have an elasticized waist so they just slip on.  So affordable and a great great work pant.  I normally wear these with a black tee for work but here I'm trying a vintage silk gold blouse I picked up over the summer for $10.  I love the sleeves on this blouse and the silk is so soft.  Either black flats or booties will be cute with this.

Some of you will remember this blouse from several years ago at THIS estate sale.  It was $5 and I just love it.  It looks great this time of year because it's brown and all those vivid flowers.  I love wearing it with jeans and my herringbone jacket.

And here it is with these 1940s trousers, another summer thrift find.  I love these pants because wow are they roomy and hide lots and lots of stuff.

Here's a shot of the closet before the transfer.

And here we are ready for cold. Besides the one long sleeve black tee I want to get I'm pretty set for fall and winter.  Going through all my things is fun.  I pretty much follow the Kon Mari method and empty out the armoire and closet. I dust and vacuum and then go piece by piece and see what fits and what I love.  I cannot stand to be uncomfortable in anything these days.  I love elastic waistbands now.  I'm serious!  You know those jeans you've seen me in lately?  I chopped them off at the ankles because they were too long and I'm not a fan of rolled jeans bc they just bother me. So don't be afraid to re-work your stuff.

I have a pretty big box of stuff going to Family Services and that makes me happy.  I hope I haven't left anything out.  I promise to show lots more of the outfits I wear in coming weeks.  I hope for it to be a regular thing here on the blog bc in a few short weeks I'll be 60 and I gotta represent.  xo
